Gynecomastia is a medical condition derived from the Greek term “female breast”. This condition is a result of abnormal development of large mammary glands caused by an imbalance of the hormones testosterone and estrogen in boys or men, resulting in swelling of the breast tissue. The condition can affect one or both breast and many times it can be uneven. Gynecomastia develops most often in boys going through puberty and resolves itself with time but unfortunately for some, the condition never goes away and can even get worse as an adult. Gynecomastia can also develop in adults from the use of certain drugs with the most common being steroids. Pure glandular Gynecomastia is often described as “puffy nipples” and is often prevalent in bodybuilders that have used anabolic steroids. When enlarge male breast are not composed of glandular tissue, but rather adipose tissue (fat), the condition is referred to as Pseudogynecomastia. However, it is very common for many to have a combination of both conditions consisting of enlarged mammary glands and excess adipose tissue. No treatment is necessary for those who are comfortable with having any or both of these conditions because it’s generally not a serious problem. But for those who are negatively affected by these conditions in any way, it can be very tough to cope with and surgery may help. Feelings of embarrassment and insecurity are common and sometimes many have pain in the breast as well.

AVAILABLE TREATMENTS

The treatment for pure Gynecomastia (glandular tissue only) is a straight forward process. During the surgical procedure, the glandular tissue is removed through an incision usually on the lower part of the areola (nipple). The procedure can be performed using local anesthetic only, although many choose to have some mild sedation as well. After removing the entire glandular tissue, the small incision is sutured and any visible scarring is usually non-existing or very hard to detect. Pure Pseudogynecomastia (fat tissue only) requires a completely different approach. The excess adipose tissue has to be removed through liposuction liposculpture through tiny incisions that do not require any type of sutures. This procedure can also be performed with local anesthetic only or combined with added mild sedation with very little to no discomfort at all. For a combination of glandular tissue and adipose tissue, liposuction liposculpture is usually performed first followed by excision of the glandular tissue. MALE BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY RECOVERY

Compression is required for at least one week following male breast reduction surgery. Compression is most important the first 48hrs following surgery in order to minimize the chances of swelling, bruising and fluid buildup. Most bruising usually subsides within a week after the surgery and within 2-3 weeks individuals can begin light exercise and more intense exercise at 4-5 weeks post surgery.
