Everything You Need to Know About Dermal Fillers

 In General

Every time you look in the mirror you notice that the fine lines, the wrinkles, nasolabial folds and dry, thin areas of your face are still there, day after day. You would like to do something about them, but you don’t want a facelift. The good news is that you don’t need a facelift to soften those lines that time and the sun have left on your skin. Our plastic surgeons at Ciao Bella Plastic Surgery are pleased to offer dermal fillers.

What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are substances that plump out wrinkles and lines, and add volume to hollows in your face and lips you think are too thin. They can be temporary or permanent, though some dermatologist acknowledge a semi-permanent class of filler.

Temporary fillers include collagen, hyaluronic acid gel and your own harvested fat. All of these are absorbed by the body over time, but you can return to the clinic for touch-ups and maintenance treatments. Permanent fillers may need to be implanted, but the surgical scars are tiny. Some of them are not as permanent as all that and can be removed if you wish.

Who Can Have Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are safe for most people who enjoy overall good health. However, you will need to be tested first if you are getting collagen injections, for some people are allergic to collagen. Hyaluronic acid and other materials are synthetic, but collagen is not. The test to find out if you’re allergic to collagen takes about a month.

The Dermal Filler Procedure
When it is time for the treatment, you will sit in a chair, and the practitioner will inject the areas to be treated with an anesthetic, probably lidocaine. Since the needles are quite fine, some people only need a topical anesthetic or even a puff of cold air on their face to make them comfortable. Then, the practitioner injects the dermal filler. If your own fat is being used, it can taken from you during a sort of mini-liposuction. Clients choose their own fat because there’s no risk of rejection, but fat can be a bit challenging to inject because the practitioner may need to massage it a bit. The result is a little more swelling and bruising than you’d see with the other fillers.

Swelling and bruising should disappear after a few days, but clients can see the beautiful results of dermal fillers right away.
